Bishop Victor Curry

“From Vision to Victory”

While still in his youth Bishop Curry embarked upon his path of ministry at the age of eighteen.  He served as Youth Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Joe Cephas Johnson, one of his fathers in the ministry.  Six years later, in 1984, he accepted his first pastoral assignment at Mt Carmel Missionary Baptist Church where he served for seven years.  With instructions to start over, he answered a call similar to Abraham’s and he left not knowing where he would go, but trusting God as his compass.  It was then that New Birth was conceived and one month later 1000 people joined the 18 founding members during the inaugural service held in the auditorium at Miami Northwestern Senior High School.  Armed with the word of God, he has, to this day, forged ahead to develop the most comprehensive approach to ministry in this century.

Bishop Curry earned a bachelor’s degree in Community-Clinical Psychology from Florida Memorial College and a Masters of Ministry degree from the Jacksonville Baptist Theological Seminary.  Expanding his knowledge base for kingdom purposes, he graduated with a Doctorate Degree in Ministry from Jacksonville Baptist Theological Seminary and received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Divinity from St. Thomas Christian College in 2004.  While valuing a formal education he has also received invaluable guidance and wisdom from not only his fathers in the ministry, Pastor Joe Cephas Johnson and Bishop Eddie L. Long, but also from  Dr. Mack King Carter and the late Drs. E. V. Hill and Moderator Arthur Jackson Jr.

Equipped for the journey Bishop Curry has acquired a long list of accomplishments for the Kingdom of God.  In March of 1995, under his incisive leadership, New Birth purchased AM 1490 WMBM, the first black owned gospel radio station in Miami. In June 1997 the Vision To Victory Human Services Corporation was founded, followed by the Dr. E. V. Hill Bible College (formerly known as New Birth Bible Institute) which received full accreditation in May of 2004.  In August of 2004 the John A McKinney Christian Academy was added to the ever-growing New Birth portfolio with New Birth Enterprise Recording Studio and Omari Chronicles Publishing as the most recent acquisition under the umbrella of New Birth Ministries.

Recognized within the community he has obtained honors and awards to include: Citizen of the Year, Pastor of The Year by the Miami Times Newspaper, Future Leader of America, Humanitarian of The Year, the NAACP-Image Award, and the 2003 J.M. Family African American Achiever Award for Business and Entrepreneurism. Moreover, the Miami Business Magazine tabbed Bishop Curry as one of the 100 most powerful people in Miami. Despite his challenging schedule and the unending demands on his time, he is a bastion in many civic endeavors. An active and vocal participant on the Board of Trustees for Florida Memorial University in Miami, Florida, Bishop Curry is also the third Vice Moderator of the Florida East Coast Missionary Baptist Association, one of Florida’s largest Baptist alliances. Recently through a new organization, Progressive Race Inspired and Dedicated to Empower (PRIDE), as its president Bishop Curry has made a firm commitment to ensure equity in both political and financial processes throughout the county, state and nation. In keeping with his passion for his people and his community, it is noteworthy that he now serves as the President of the Miami-Dade Branch of the NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization. During his previous tenure as President of the Miami-Dade Branch of the NAACP Bishop Curry led the organization to exceptional levels of membership. Under his leadership, the Branch commendably educated and empowered the community through town hall meetings, political forums and “Get Out the Vote” campaigns. Also through his leadership, the Branch was instrumental in the efforts to eradicate the violence against, including the conviction of, law enforcement officers who were found guilty of killing young black men in the city of Miami. Bishop Curry and the Miami-Dade Branch led the March on Tallahassee in 2000, the historic movement to the State’s capital of some hundreds of thousands! Bishop Curry and the Branch were instrumental in the protests against the hanging chads and uncounted votes, and subsequent voter irregularity hearings regarding the 2000 Elections.

With an eye unlike most and a passion and fervency for justice Bishop Curry predicted the now known political discrepancies in the current administration as well as the high stakes testing scandal and the façade of faith-based initiatives.  When his concerns were not popular he spoke with veracity and many years later the aggregate is now awakening to concur with the prophet’s message.  He exhibits a keen insight and perception that results in judicious and austere leadership. Never satisfied with status quo, he pursues the quest for excellence through critical and fearless examination to ascertain the highest level of accomplishment for the Kingdom of God with his focus on the word and the will of God.

His current ministerial endeavors include planning for the construction of a Family Life Center, the expansion of the international focus of New Birth to include missionary outreaches to Haiti and Jamaica, a comprehensive strengthening of the family beginning with an enhanced Men’s ministry (The Nation of Jesus), an extensive and relevant Youth ministry, a superior Women’s ministry, and the development of a personal, nurturing component in discipleship often lost in the larger church environments.

Bishop Curry is also a published author of three books titled, “The Stewardship Test, The Stewardship Task Workbook” and “Where Your Treasure Is.”  These ecclesiastical literary works are designed to minister Godly stewardship principles for effective lifestyle management. The forthcoming biography, which chronicles Bishop Curry’s life and ministry is titled, “A Charge To Keep I Have”.

Bishop Curry is the loving father of three daughters, Victoria, Veronica and Victory.
